Maleria tablets - check with the Doc or get from Boots?

Hi guys,

I%26#39;m off to Goa in 6 weeks time. Boots have advised that they have Maleria tablets £18 for the course (can%26#39;t remember the brand). Should I check with the Doctor in case there is a particular type I need or will these be sufficient?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi

The £18 tabs will probably be chloroquine/proguanil which is fine for Goa.

Always best to check with your doc (there are some jabs you will need as well)

hi haley

we are going in 5weeks and 5days 13th april from gatwick where are you flying from we are going to calungute

We got ours from travelpharm.com and it was £12.50 per person. Arrived next day. Good service from them.

Ditto Katy,

Travelpharm are the cheapest for chloroquine / proguanil @ £12.60 for 7 weeks pack. The Travelpharm service is very good and they are widely recommended on TA forum.

Strictly speaking the CDC now recommend Malarone, Ref:

…cdc.gov/travel/contentMalariaDrugsPublic.as…

This is quite expensive at £2.20 pill/day (being fairly new I guess its a case of drug company paying for research %26amp; profit).

Personally I will be taking chloroquine / proguanil on a cost vs risk basis. This is personal preference only, and the Mrs (being a Medical Sister) is sticking by the books and taking Malarone.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Bought from Travelpharm again, £12.60 for 7 weeks supply, ordered on Sunday, arrived Tuesday.

Hi iluvholidaystoo, I am also flying from Gatwick on 13th April, going to Cavelossim.

From what I have read it seems that the cheaper tablets appear to have worse side effects (generally speaking).

Think I will check with the Doc. Didn;t realise you can get them on prescription, or that you need other jabs!! :-)

You don%26#39;t need a prescription for proguanil/chloroquine. Most people take these without any side effects, but like any drug, they could affect you (so could Malarone). You%26#39;ll probably have to have tetanus, polio, diptheria, typhoid and hepatitis A jabs (the first three are just one jab, so it%26#39;s not as bad as you may think). Best to check with your doctor though, as you say.
