Domestic flights from Delhi

In flying from Delhi to Mumbai, does anyone know how much time we should allow between arrival for check-in and flight departure? This should be a mid-day flight if that makes any difference.

I have gotten so much good information from this forum. Thanks to all who contribute.

Domestic flights from Delhi

Normally it%26#39;s 2 hrs prior to flight departure but if have only check in baggage with you ....can avail the facility of telecheck in service of defferent airlines and can 1 hr prior to flight departure.

Mid-day flight doesnot effect on timing of its check in but it has good effet before you reach the airport from the town...

thanks

Domestic flights from Delhi

We were informed that 1 hour prior to the flight was adequate although personally I think this is cutting it a bit fine. 90 minutes should be OK. a midday flight is good as you will miss the total madness of the morning and evening rush hours. it will just be the usual madness......

In India all baggage has to be X rayed before you check it in.At the domestic terminal each airline has its own X ray machine so the queues aren%26#39;t too bad. After the Xray and tagging comes the usual check in queue followed by the security queue so as I said 90 mins to 2 hours sounds about right. (but of course after all the queues your flight will be delayed at least an hour)

Normally, about 90 min before flight is fine, but as mentioned, the morning and afternoon rush is chaotic. So if your flight is between 12pm to 4 pm, 90 min. Anything earlier or later=2 hrs to be safe.

As cfm99 says, in spite of everything your flight will likely be an hour late. Delhi airport is particularly stressed with congestion these days.

Depands where you will be staying in Delhi you can take 90 Min at Airport + 30 Min Traffic + Distance from Hotel to Airport

so be there atleast before 2 Hrs prior to departure of flight.

I found the checking in/departure area at Delhi airport to be chaotic, and if you can have some time in hand it is good. Also factor in some time to reach the airport-depending on where you%26#39;re staying, of course. Traffic in Delhi can be horrendous..

Maybe I%26#39;m missing something here, but in the gazillion times that I have flown domestic, I have never reported at a terminal earlier than 1 hour prior to flight takeoff. That has always given me enough and more time. My more adventurous colleagues arrive 45-30 minutes before departure, but that is not something I care to recommend to anyone.

The official statement by Jet Airways on their website is 75 minutes (except for Srinagar and Leh which is 120 minutes). Passengers traveling in groups (10 or more passengers traveling together) are advised to report to the airport at least 90 minutes prior to the flight departure.

I would really like to understand why people are suggesting 90 minutes to 2 hours. Is there something new happening in Delhi that I don%26#39;t know about? The only glitch in winter that I know of is the early morning fog, and resultant delays, but that%26#39;s not the case now. In any case, it is warming up now.

  • Help!!!

Thinking about visiting India with my husband (both in late 50%26#39;s but fighting hard against it!) next year and would appreciate ANY advice on when and where to visit. Obviously there are must sees like Taj Mahal, but India is such a vast country and we would like to see as much as we can without killing ourselves in the process! The plan therefore is to also spend part of holiday being spoilt and lying on a beach somewhere wonderful!! Any ideas on best way to incorporate both would be greatly appreciated - realise it might mean we have to split it over two holidays (why not) to do all we want to. Heard Goa is gorgeous, but don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s practical to do any sightseeing from this base. In other words my head is completely fuddled and need help urgently! Many thanks to any forummers who can help.

    Help!!!

You can go to Rajasthan and Gujarat and end your stay in Diu - good beaches there.

    Help!!!

A week-ten days in Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, followed by a week relaxing in Goa/Kerala should do the trick.

You can buy all sorts of pills and potions over the counter.

    slimming pills cavelossim

Yes you can...Dmello the chemist in Cavelossim has most of the stuff you%26#39;ll need....

But you can%26#39;t guarantee 100% that all the pills you buy in India are genuine. Lots of stuff around about this if you look. The majority fake drugs are manufactured in India, follwed by China.

hi the hotel we stayed in had saftey boxes in the rec and when you want to use it they unlock it for you then you unlock it yourself get what ever out then lock it back up then they lock it so its only you who can unlock and lock it back up its very safe but did have to pay a small fee hope that helps you and have a good time

    That helps thank you!!

    Hi

Stayed in lots of hotels and ive have seen many types of safety boxes, generally they are just metal cabinet boxes and you buy a padlock, sometimes they are double locks where you have a key and they have a key but you need both to open it.

They charge about 1000 rups for two wks i think but its worth it.

    stels

You do have to pay, although its not much by our standards. Take your own combination lock, better than losing a key!

  • India novice

I%26#39;m considering holidaying in India next year with hubby and 3 or even 4 teenagers. Would love a mixture of cultural sightseeing probably Agra but combining with a beach holiday, Kerala or Goa perhaps. We would have 2 weeks with possibly 拢5k is it do able? Would it be cheaper to book a package or organise it myself? It would probably have to be around Christmas to avoid the children missing school. Can anyone help? Many thanks

    India novice

Definitely you must organise the tour yourself.

In north India, Delhi, you can use State Express to organize transport. Sanjeev Chandra helped me many times. In south india, Chennai, Mr.Raja of Welcom TourRs and Travels, is smart and helpful.

Chalukya tours was fantastic in Kerala, they organized a fantastic 2 days cruise on a kettuvalam (houseboat) for a ridicoulos price.

Choice holidays from Mumbai are efficient and experienced.

If you hire a taxi on your own consider to pay no more than 1500Rs per day (about 27 euros)everything included. Avoid to choose Government Hotel, they are mainly very badly manteined and sometimes more expensive of other same standard htl.

You will find numbers of decent budget hotels, at 1000Rs per double room, (17 euros) mainly an extra bed is free of charge.

The best of budget hotel I ever visited is Hotel Corbelli in Pondicherry (see my review) and the owner is from....Wolverhampton!!!

    Hi

I haven%26#39;t stayed in the Don Hill myself but a couple of friends stayed there. They said it was basic but clean. We stayed in the Loui Beach Hotel just around the corner and the Don Hill was better than that.

Found the reviews for this hotel:

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297605-d315607…

    Lisa

We stayed at the Don hill last year it is the worsted hotel that we have ever stayed at

We went for a drink and were speaking to some of the guests and they said although basic it was typical basic and in need of a lick of paint. They seemed to like it there. We havent stayed there but have stayed in the Dona Alcina and the Summerville which are also very tired hotels.

my friend stayed there and asked for an extra knob of butter for breakie to put on his toast.later in the evening he got a bill for 10 ruppees saying that was the cost of an extra knob of butter.a large argument occured but the manager said he had to pay it,so reluctantly he did.a sign then went up stating that only 1 knob of butter was to be served at breakfast with toast,or you had to pay extra.his final answer was to stop going in the hotel bar with his friends resulting in less takings.

    Vegiehead

That would be the last ruppe they got from me. That is taking the absolute Michael

yes, i have to thank you too. and i must apologise for the misinformation i gave, but it was in good faith. the information i was given, was by a chemist. i will have a few word s with him when i return to goa. he has not replied to my e-mail, and neither has ';Cipla';. but at least they answered yours LGG.

    Advice needed Candolim or Cavelossim?

Just about to book up for Goa in February 2009 but can%26#39;t decide between these 2 resorts. We want somewhere with lots of birds/wildlife and good scenery so Cavelossim sounds like it might be better. We would stay at the Holiday Inn or if we stay in Candolim we would stay at Silver Sands in the one of the new rooms. Would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks

    Advice needed Candolim or Cavelossim?

Cavelossim sits nestled between the River Sal and the sea and is great for birdlife etc.We were once coming back from a boat trip and as we came into the estuary we spotted an Osprey swooping down and catching a large fish, we even managed to get it on video :-) (there are also egrets, kites, greenshanks, redshanks several types of kingisher etc. etc.) The Holiday Inn is in a great location with direct access to the beach. For an idea of the scenery around Cavelossim have a look at flickr.com/photos/… and flickr.com/photos/… I have posted some photo%26#39;s of our last couple of trips.

    Advice needed Candolim or Cavelossim?

We went to Candolim on our first trip to Goa two years and then went to Cavelossim for our second trip last year. Out of the two I preferred Cavelossim but I%26#39;m glad I tried the north first so I had something to compare it to. The main wildlife that we saw in Candolim were the cows on the beach! For the birds/wildlife I think you will be much better in Cavelossim. We stayed at the Holiday Inn and thought it was great - I think the Silver Sands is a more basic hotel though it does seem to get good reviews.

Thanks for the replies, they were a great help. We have decided on Holiday Inn.

In case anyone wonders in the future, there isn%26#39;t any windsurfing hire. A few people were kitesurfing as it was quite windy when we were there but think it was their own equipment. Didn%26#39;t spoil the holiday - loads of other things to do.

goa in April is it to hot?

I am planning to travel to Goa in the first week of April with my 5 year old, but i am woried that the heat will be too much has any one been there at this time of year cheers Jill

goa in April is it to hot?

April Goa will be hot, if you reside in cold country, you find it inconvinent

goa in April is it to hot?

yes indeed its will b hot n humid in goa at that time of the year

Hi Jill. We are also going to Goa this April. We have been at this time for the past two years (school hols!) and have been fine. It is hot and humid but you just need to be prepared for that. Wear lots of sun screen, drink plenty of water, get air-con in your room if poss (we%26#39;ve never had air-con but have been ok). It%26#39;s lovely and breezy on the beach so grab some shade if it gets too much, either under a parasol or in a shack. Never been at any other time of year so can%26#39;t make comparisons but April is the only time we can go. Love it!!! Jayne

We went last week of March into 1st week of April and it was hot and humid. The other thing to bear in mind is stomach upsets, there%26#39;s nothing more awful that having a bad tummy and being too hot / sticky and uncomfortable.

That said, we knew it was going to be hot and sticky and we loved it.

We went the first three weeks of April 2006 and it was fine, hot but not excessively humid. We had one small rain storm late afternoon, early evening and that was it. We put aircon on in our rooms when we went out to dinner and then turned it off when we got back and just relied on the ceiling fan for the night, air con made it too cold! During the day we tended to end up on the beach as there was always a strong breeze blowing and it helped you keep cool. It was Easter when we went and there were loads of children in the Dona Sylvia, some much younger than 5 and they all seemed to be fine.

thank you for the replies to ';is it too hot in Goa in April, they have been very helpful, I am reassured and intend to go ahead and book, thank you

We went in April 2005 %26amp; it was hot %26amp; humid as has been said.

We also ran into a tropical rainstorm on our stay which lasted around 2-3 hrs. I must confess to being terrified as were my 2 teenage girls.

I also have a 5 year old %26amp; mulled over the possibility of taking him with us this year.

    After considering;

My son being blonde %26amp; fair

Length of flight (15 hrs from Manchester airport)

    Heat

%26amp; the possibility of encountering another rain storm

I decided against it this time.

    15 hours?? Mines only 9!

Our first ever trip to Goa was an April/early May and although it was humid there was always a nice sea breeze and nothing that a cold beer/limca/lime soda couldn%26#39;t fix.We had a wonderful time and fell in love with Goa. The other thing is for day trips hire a taxi for the day, one it is cheaper and two you can do things at your own pace, stop for a drink when you feel like it etc. etc. etc. Have a great trip :-)

We are doing two or three stops, unfortunately.

    Off to Goa

After going to Gambia for many years we decided on a change and have booked to go to Silver Sands holiday village next Feb. No doubt we%26#39;ll have pleny of questions to ask. Looking forward to the change :)

What type of clothing is appropriate in Goa? I%26#39;ve read mixed reviews (some saying that it%26#39;s best to be mostly covered for women - no shorts, bikinis etc and others say Goa is much more ';relaxed'; in terms of acceptable clothing. Any tips/suggestions would be great.

Clothing is not a problem in Goa. It is very much like the Mediterranean resorts. North Goa beaches are packed with skimpily clad holiday makers on sun-loungers three lanes deep! The south is much quieter and it is still possible to find a lovely area of beach all to yourself. Goa is not like the rest of India due to the Portuguese influence as they ruled Goa for many years. Even the Goan people think of India as being somewhere else.

When in Salcette you must visit the excellent party venue at %26#39;Treat Yourself%26#39;. Regular parties take place with barbecue, bar, band and fireworks. Any special occassion for you and they will put a party together. They also have rooms and a swimming pool + gym and ayurveda. Ask any taxi/rickshaw for Frank%26#39;s Gym.

Regarding swim wear, bikinis etc ...

A friend of mine took his family from the Punjab in north India to Goa for a holiday last month.

His wife and the two kids had never seen the sea before. Goa was quite an exotic place for them and they enjoyed it very much. On returning home, my friends eight year old daughter was on the phone to me in UK and she told me, ';The people in Goa do not have any clothes. When I go there again I will take some for them!'; Enjoy your holiday.

we stayed a couple of hundred yards away on the same beach .. have to say that there were always a lot of out of state Indians staying there at weekends, and the restaurant area is very basic, didn%26#39;t get as far as seeing the rooms

Posted this on your other thread but I%26#39;ll put it here as well ;-)

Not really just use common sense (I don%26#39;t mean that to sound patronising), keep the suntan lotion topped up,and make sure of plenty fluids (a lot more than normal) pick up a couple of sachets of rehydration salts in Goa and if your daughter appears (or anyone does) a bit wobbity then take one, they taste like smelly arm pits but they do the trick. Carry round a small bottle of anti-bac hand gel (the one you don%26#39;t need water for) you get a small bottle I think 100 ml that is perfect for popping in the camcorder case etc. and just keep it topped up from a bigger bottle. All pharmacy%26#39;s in Goa are c=very well stocked and should yoy require anything over there you will be able to get it. The Goans love kids and will make your daughter feel so welcome and like a star, have a wonderful trip :-)

    Trip from Bangalore to Kerala

I would like some advise on planning a trip to Kerala - unfortunately we will be travelling during peak season. We hope to see Kerala from 2Jan09 to 9/2/09 (1week). I will be travelling with my husband and 2 kids 13 %26amp; 11yrs. I would like to know how best to get to the backwaters as well as periyar . Are these fun for kids too. I am quite happy to travel by train as we have done this before. Any suggestions of how to plan the trip.Ta

    Trip from Bangalore to Kerala

Both backwaters and Periyar are fun for kids and all you need to do is book in advance. They are not connected by train so you will need to hire a cab to get from one place to another-or travel by bus.

    Trip from Bangalore to Kerala

    Greetings,

I was in Kerala two years ago in Travandrum. The back water is a relaxing and enjoyable day trip. A trip to Cape Comorin in Tamil is also worth it. We traveled with a small group in a mini bus it average travel speed is approximately 20 miles an hour.

    Have a good Trip,

    Palmetto State Man

Thanks all for your responses. Does anyone know if ther are backwater trip in other parts of kerala or are they only in kumarakom?

If you are literally going from Bangalore to Kerala, here are a couple of suggestions as we did that trip in reverse.

    1) Cheap regular flights from Bangalore to Thiravananthapuram, and then explore the area from there up to Kochi.

    2) Hire car and driver from Bangalore. First stop Mysore, then up to Ooty Hill Station and take the Toy Train down and on to Coimbatore. Drive then down to Kochi past the elephant temple place. After a day in Fort Cochin, drive down to Alapuzha and either take the backwater ferry or hire a rice barge for a day%26#39;s cruising. Then inland to Thekkady and Perriyar W/life Park. Drive down to Thiravanthapuram and on to chill out at Kovalam. 5 day trip, 2 days chill-out and fly back to Bangalore.

Annexe at Silver Sands Holiday Village.

We are going to be staying in the annexe at Silver Sands Holiday Village, Candolim.

I cannot find a photo of it ar any info on what it is like.

We are travelling with Jewel in the Crown but they do not show the annexe in their brochure.

Has any one stayed there and if so, what is it like?

Annexe at Silver Sands Holiday Village.

We are staying there too from the 8th March, my cousin who goes every year, said the annexe rooms are much better, have air con and not as basic as the main building, hope this helps

Annexe at Silver Sands Holiday Village.

    Thanx london blondie

Have a good holiday, I am really looking forward to my first trip to Goa, going in April.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to report back about the annexe when you return. I am sure I am not the only person who would like to know more about it.

    Kind Regards Sandy

We stayed at the Silver Sands in 2006 and have not heard of the annex rooms, the new rooms were called superior rooms, we are going back in December and have upgraded to one of these rooms but that%26#39;s with First Choice, have a look in their Sunstart brochure it may give you some idea.

    DebyC

    hello Stardust200....

Silver Sands only do three types of accommodation basic (annexe rooms ) Bungalows and Superior rooms. The annexe rooms are the ones nearer the pool . Stayed last year at Silver Sands in the Superior rooms which were fantastic aircon/fridge/telephone/Satelite tv all as standard. If on arrival you donot like the annexe rooms (they are the basic)just ask to be upgraded.Happy hols SERETA

    Stardust200....

forgot to say stardust if you look at my write up on silversands the photograph by the swimming pool l show gives you a glimpse of the annexe rooms .SERETA

    Thank you Sereta

The info I have from Jewel in the Crown is that there is a new annex block that has been built. They say it has A/C, fan, fridge etc. The entrance leads onto the lane to the beach. Not sure if it is the same block that you are thinking of. Still I%26#39;ll see in April, and get back to you what it is like.

Please continue to say positive things about this hotel %26amp; the beach shacks that are the nearest, as the last repy on trip advisor is not a good one.

I am going on the 8th March for 2 weeks and I am so looking forward to it.

We have never ben to Goa before so it will hopefully all be one amazing experience.

Hi sorry I replied in the wrong area.... we are staying at the hotel Aldeia Santa Rita, hence the reply re: the beach shacks which are near this hotel.

The unhappy commentmaking reference to the ';Aldeia Santa Rita'; was posted on 30/01/07 by ';DOTIANED'; on the travel review of trip advisor.

Has any one stayed here since then to chear me up before we go?

I have stayed at this hotel twice, we really like it, the staff are lovely and it very near the beach. They provide lovely clean towels for the pool and the beach, which is a plus, saves carrying too many in your luggage. The only reason we have not stayed there again is that we can only get all inclusive deals and it is a waste in Goa as we never stay in the hotel. We used Blue Wave beach shack when we stayed there, it is usually near the exit from the hotel. Patrick makes the best Prawn curry I have ever tasted and the Lobster is out of this world. There are some lovely restaurants nearby, especially the little Italian ';Santa Lucia'; it is very cheap %26amp; the staff are lovely. We still go down to see everyone even though we are not staying there, especially our Taxi driver friend Raj and as soon as the tour operators here do Bed %26amp; Breakfast there, we will be back. We are going out on the 3rd March, can%26#39;t wait.

Thank you Goagirl that is good to hear, as it is our 1st experience in Goa we were not sure of just staying B%26amp;B. We will try out the places you have suggested to eat at.

Totally agree with goagirl- we have stayed at the ASR twice now and loved it both times.

You will adore the staff. They can%26#39;t do enough to please you and are so proud of their little hotel. When we were there the ASR had just won the monthly prize for best hotel in their chain (of three) and Sanjay was letting off fireworks, he was so pleased.

Orlando will get you fresh spices and his own secret masala mix if you ask him and he got us a huge lobster each for our last night%26#39;s meal. All you have to do is ask.

Please do not take any notice of whinging, grudging comments from people whose only expectation of all-inclusive is to pay nothing extra for Coca-cola and international branded drinks. Get Limca instead and drink the local beer and port (very good indeed) The food is varied and good, especially specials nights, and there is plenty of choice for breakfast.

The rooms are simple with tiled floors but that is appropriate to the tropics and we found them to be spotlessly kept. We are trying Kerala this year but we will definitely be back.

Thank you stjohnshouse I am starting to plan my to do list as we go on the 8.03.08,we both work F/T %26amp; the W/E %26#39;ns seem to go so quick, so much to do.

What part of Goa - to vist?

Thinking about next year%26#39;s winter holiday already ( Jan or Feb). Goa features high on our places to visit. Don%26#39;t know anything about Goa. Which area should we visit? We don%26#39;t want absolute total seclusion, however, not sure what%26#39;s on offer. Also if we do B%26amp;B deal do the %26#39;towns/villages%26#39; have enough choice for meals in evening? Really have no idea of what to expect. Trying to work out %26#39;all inclusive v B%26amp;B%26#39;.

Any information to help us make our decision would be gratefully received. Thanks in anticpation.

What part of Goa - to vist?

Which are of Goa to visit depends how busy you like it. North Goa is busier than the south with Calangute and Baga being the busiest resorts and Candolim slightly quieter. It%26#39;s very cheap to eat out in Goa and there are lots of great restaurants to choose from so it%26#39;s a shame to go all inclusive and be stuck to your hotel. Even the most remote hotels tend to have at least a couple of beach shacks within walking distance. Cavelossim is a lovely village in south Goa which is quieter than the northern resorts but still has a great selection of restaurants and shacks to choose from. I%26#39;d have a look in a couple of brochures and pick out some hotels that you like the look of and then come back on and ask more questions.

What part of Goa - to vist?

    Hello,

AI is not worth it in Goa, there are loads of restaurants and they are cheap,so i would recommend go B+B. On where to go it depends if you want lively or peace and quiet, the north e.g baga, calangute are lively and the south cavelossim, benaulim are quiet. personally i like calangute and stay at the osborne resorts which is at the candolim end of calangute and therefore quiet but hectic is just down the road.

    steve

Hi Dol123 we have been to varoius hotels in South Goa but we like the Dona Sylvia I know its the dreaded AI but we eat out almost every evening, the location is great, the other hotel nearby is the Holiday Inn which you can book B %26amp; B but for the differnce in price £80 I think the Dona Sylvia is the better option just walk out the gates to a great selection of restaurants no need for taxis unless of course you want to go on trips the atmosphere at the hotel is wonderful. Hope this helps

Great...this is a start. I went out yesterday and got some brochures so will start looking at your various suggestions. I will come back on and ask when we are fine tuning a specific hotel. It%26#39;s good to be aware of B%26amp;B option.

    Thanks

Hi Dol. Don%26#39;t know what your budget is, but go for B%26amp;b. Our first trip is now 2 weeks away. and we can%26#39;t wait. after taking in so much advice from this forum, we don%26#39;t expect to spend more than £500.00 for the two weeks. ( even that is more than some people on here recommend ) watch my report when we return, 25th march. i don%26#39;t care how long it will be, but I%26#39;ll put on EVERYTHING we did for those two weeks. best regards

    Buses from Agra to Jaipur?

My sister and me are visiting Agra for one day in March. We will continue from Agra to Jaipur and we would like to leave Agra late morning or early afternoon. For that time I think the bus is our only option. Could you please let me know where are the buses departing in Agra? At Agra bus station? At some specific bus stop?

We would like to get the seats at air conditioned bus and I understand they leave at 10.00 or 11.30 a.m or 2.30 p.m (A/C Goldline, RSRTC - I found the unconfirmed timetables at www.rsrtc.gov.in/Result_Timetable.asp). Do you know if it is possible to book the seats in advance and/or buy the tickets to the bus in advance by net or when we arrive to Agra? If yes, how could we do it? If no, how early should we be queuing at bus stop? Also, is it safe for two women to travel at daytime in a long way bus?

    Buses from Agra to Jaipur?

yes, at the main bus station (deluxe coaches are available only from sindhi camp bus stand). there is an hourly bus connection from 6:30 - 17:30 from agra to jaipur, check out http://www.jaipurtravel.com/jaipur_bus.htm for the schedule.

don%26#39;t get stuck on a commuter bus like i did ;)

Thank you all for your replies. If I understand correctly from this and the other posts, trains or hired car + driver are most recommended vehicles while travelling in India. We are already getting trains from Delhi to Agra and from Jaipur to Delhi.

Deepa (or someone else), do you know how much the average cost be to hire a car + driver (taxi?) to take us from Agra to Jaipur? We would like to get the air conditioned car and English speaking driver. How long is it approximately taking to make a trip by car?

To check if you are getting a sensible rate, check the number of kilometers you need to travel. At the lowest end, an air-conditioned Indica might cost Rs. 6.50 per kilometer. A toyota qualis is about 8.50 (probably what you should go for). You will also need to pay around 100 or 150 as driver allowance.

Given that they work on a different calendar and are sometimes every other year, I can%26#39;t work out the dates. Anyone have dates and location of any Festivals in that area ?

    Hindu Festivals in March

    any info ?

    Hindu Festivals in March

I know of only Holi, or the Festival of colours in that time. Its on March 21-22. Don%26#39;t know how far it is celebrated in Kerala though, but its a big festival in most of India.

You can do a search on the forum for holi as it has been discussed before.

21 march is Id - big in Kerala

22 is Good friday - big in Kerala

23 is Holi - basically a North Indian festival where revellers [many unruly] throw coloured water on everybody else - plus point: not a traditional Kerala festival so unlikely to be celebrated.

24 is Easter - very big in Kerala

Can I just check those dates for 2008 ! Good Friday will surely be on Friday 21st rather than on the 23rd ?!

On which date then is id and what is this festival ?

Re Easter, I have read that it is a tradition the week after Easter to climb a hill to a Cross. Where is this situated exactly ?

    Thanks for the prompt reponses.

%26gt;%26gt;22 is Good friday - big in Kerala

Good Friday is more likely to be celebrated on Friday 21st rather than on Saturday 22nd :)

Actually, March 21 has 3 festivals on the same date, Holi - Hindu, Good Friday - Christian and a Muslim festival on the same date, possibly Id but I am not sure.

  • Which airlines?

We are visiting Kerala in March and have booked our flights to Kochin but we want to add a flight from Kochin to Trivandrum. Does anybody know which airline flys this route? Is it easy to book when we arrive or are we better booking it from the UK first?

    Thanks.

    Which airlines?

You may want consider travel by train-the fast trains take just under 4 hours, from city centre to city centre, whereas for a trip by plane you need to report at the airport at least an hour in advance,if the flight is on time and the taxi ride to the airport is about 45 minutes, with another 30 minutes at the other end. The flight takes about 30 minutes. Plane fare will be about 4X or 5X train fare, maybe more plus cab fares at each end, another hit.

    Which airlines?

gio is right, the fast train may be actually faster. Cochin airport is a good 45 min drive in the wrong direction, add to that the 1hr check in, approx 1 hr flight and approx. 30min travel time from TRV airport to the city centre - you are better off taking a train from Ernakulam station right upto TRV city centre. For flights you can check cleartrip.com; ezeego1.com; yatra.com; makemytrip.com

Cochin to Trivandrum buses are also available, and if you are doing Allepey or anything else in between you may want to consider a bus or private taxi to take you elsewhere en route. Eg. You could visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary and then go on to Trivandrum. I just read another members post recommending Jacob taxi driver +919447802914.

Try these sites for railway booking and info.

    www.irctc.co.in

Thank you for your help but we will already be at the airport as we are arriving into Cochin in the morning from the UK and want to get straight onto another plane to Travandrum. We will probably get the train back up though.

I am not too sure about connectivity from Trivandrum to Cochin-although I do know there are flights. Best check makemytrip or cleartrip or yatra about flight timings.

    accommodation in Rajasthan

Hi, my friend and I both in our 50%26#39;s, and travelling with our daughters are planning to do our trip of a lifetime to Rajasthan in November.

Unfortuately we are on a limited budget and have taken quite a while to save for this trip.

we are hoping to arrange it ourselves, but would love some help with good, clean not very expensive accommodation please.

We plan on travelling on trains and buses.

We don%26#39;t mind backpackers that welcome the older travellers, or probably guest houses would be preferable.

We just want it to be clean, friendly and at a minimal rate for that kind of accom.

The places we are looking at are Delhi, Agra, Pushkar, maybe a tent if they are not too expensive, Udaipur, preferably with a view, and we are willing to pay a bit more to have a view. Jaipur and Jodphur, also Bikaneer.

We just do not want to stay in these posh hotels that all the tour operators keep throwing at us.

Hoping to hear some feed back. Many thanks, Beau

PS If anyone has any suggestion of getting to New Delhi From Australia, they would be much appreciated to. Cheers and happy travels

Dear Beau7... Better for you top search this site and recommendations already made. If you need specific advice, post to a specific forum, say Jaipur for advice on Jaipur hotel. Also specify the budget you are looking for. There are dorms for Rs 200 a night. You wouldnt be wanting to stay with your daughter in such places. TripAdvisor works best for -

Thankyou so much foryour good advice.

I was thinking afterwards, I should maybe write it in each towns forum. I shall do this, and I will start to read trip advisers advice on these things. Would yoiube able to tell me what a good INR price would be for a comfortable clean room, that is very basic, but clean. We really have no idea how many rupees it would be around about.

Thankyou again for your very quick reply. Kind Regards, Beau

india is a great place for budget travellers so you may not have too much of a problem if you plan carefully.

good clean rooms can be had for 400 to 600 rupees also in most of these rajasthan cities you mentioned.some places you may even get rooms for 300 rs but thats in the off season from april to september.

for tents you will have to take permission to pitch them. we do have some expensive tents accomodation in some cities in rajasthan and their rates vary from 1500n to 5000rs depending on the facility provided.

use the forums here, internet and sites like

    www.hostelworld.com

    www.travel-library.com/india/jaipur

to plan your trip and do prior bookings as you will be travelling in peak tourist season.

    hapy travels

I would recommend you go with Rs 1000 to Rs 1500 per night. Youll get pretty good hotels in this budget, e.g. Arya Niwas in Jaipur - www.aryaniwas.com

Getting from Australia to New Delhi? Keep watching Jetstar. Every now and then they do something crazy, lke the Sydney-Kuala Lumpur flights they had a few months ago for $AUD34 each way (plus taxes, of course). One you%26#39;re out of Australia -- in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur -- you have lots of posibilities to get into India on the cheap, but maybe not directly to Delhi (most go to Chennai or Kochi). Air India Express and Jet Airways are two cheapies that go from Kuala Lumpur, but we have saved ourselves some money by organising our own overland transport from KL to Singapore and then flying to Bangalore with Tiger Airways. They also do Chennai for a few dollars more, and that would probably be the best for you, since from Chennai you can get to Delhi for around 500 to 1000 rupees with one of the many internal budget airlines which India has: GoAir, Spicejet, Air Deccan, Jetlite.... there%26#39;s a list, and links, at attitudetravel.com/lowcostairlines/asia/byco…

We grabbed cheap fares as they came up, and were left with a schedule that gives us a bit of mucking around.... nonetheless, we can get from Sydney to Bangalore and back for around $AUD625 plus whatever it costs by bus from KL to Singapore, and then on to Delhi by air for around $AUD80 (about half that if we took the train, but we%26#39;re tight for time). But you have to be prepared to do a bit of hunting on the internet, and that means also going not when you want to go but when the airline has the fares you want (we had to choose August-September -- not the best time, but, hopefully, not the worst -- to get those fares).

We last went to India in October-November 2004, and it was without a doubt the best holiday we ever had in our lives. While we saw much of the sub-continent, from Leh in the north to Bangalore in the south-east, from Jaisalmer in the west to Kochi in the south-west, we thought that Rajasthan was easily the most exciting part of India, and I applaud your decision to choose it for your first trip. You certainly don%26#39;t need a tour operator to book your hotels for you; we did everything ourselves, but, of course, we had a lot of help: from the good people on Tripadvisor and Lonely Planet Thorntree, and especially from the people at www.indiamike.com. Don%26#39;t do anything without familiarising yourself with that site. It will absorb you for months, but you will learn everything you need to know about where to stay, how to get there, and what to see.

It was with their help that we found the Hotel Sheela at Agra. It%26#39;s fifty metres from the entrance gate/ticket booth to the Taj Mahal, so you can get up at 5:20 in the morning, shower, and walk out the gate and there you are, at 5:45, first in line. The Taj opens at 6 a.m. (beware! closed Fridays!) and you will be in there when the sun comes up, which is a GREAT way to see the Taj. When you come out, at 8 a.m., you will be aghast at the queues at the ticket office, and as you return to the Sheela for breakfast (knowing that many of the visitors to the Taj for that day are still at their hotel waiting for the shuttle bus to begin their day), you will bless them for building exactly where they did. And, what%26#39;s more, it%26#39;s a budget establishment... back then a double room with private bath (can%26#39;t remember if it was air-con) cost us 450 rupees.

We also found the Haveli Guest House at Jodhpur. This one is so good that there are now several copycat guest houses there with the same name, so when you find their site on the internet, check the photograph so you know you%26#39;re being delivered to the right place. The Haveli is in the old town, opposite a well, and it has an amazing view from the front windows of the great fort.

WE also found the wonderful Shahi Palace Hotel at Jaisalmer. This was our favourite place in five weeks in India... the town AND the guest house. I note that you haven%26#39;t listed Jaisalmer as part of your preferred cities, but if you read some of the reports on indiamike, you may feel inclined to change your mind. When we go back, this year, we land in Bangalore, which is a long way from Jaisalmer... but we have already made up our minds that whatever else happens, we MUST get back to Jaisalmer and we MUST, again, stay with Dev and Bapu at the Shahi Palace. And we MUST take another one of Setan%26#39;s camel safaris.

I can%26#39;t help you with budget accommodation in Jaipur.... we found, from Tripadvisor, a terrific place which just happened, at that time, to be vastly underpriced on its own website, and we ended up getting a suite for 800 rupees... the bathroom alone was bigger than some of the bedrooms we stayed in. However, shortly after our visit, this hotel got wise and more than doubled its price. So there%26#39;s no point in even telling you its name. We won%26#39;t be staying there this time... we firmly believe that travel money is best spent on sightseeing, not lazing around a pool.

Udaipur is full of interesting places to stay, and we wanted a place near the palace. Well, when we picked the Khumba (or Kumbha, I think) Palace Guest House (which is run by a Dutch woman and her Indian husband... their meals are an amazing blend of traditional Indian and northern European) we certainly got our wish... their back wall is actually the wall of the palace! Of course, that means there%26#39;s no view of the palace (all you see are the old stones, but you can lean against them in the Kumbha Palace%26#39;s garden, if you want); the hotel itself faces the other way. It%26#39;s a great budget place to stay, however.

Can%26#39;t tell you anything about accommodation in Bikaner, as we missed it last time (we plan ro catch up on it this year). If you stay at Shahi Palace in Jaisalmer, however, I would imagine they would be able to recommend a place at Bikaner... and they may even be able to negotiate some good rates on your behalf. They are the kind of people who will do this for you... they are not just in it for the money. Lovely people.... but, then, that%26#39;s true of so many of the people we met in Rajasthan, and Jaisalmer seemed to have the pick of the crop.

You haven%26#39;t listed Varanasi or Bundi. Of course, Varanasi is a bit of a hike from Rajasthan, but it%26#39;s an amazing place and should not be missed. And Bundi is so marvellous that, on this coming trip (which I am planning right now), we came upon a diilemma: should we take our kids to Agra and show them the Taj, or leave Agra out and have a day and a half in Bundi (time wouldn%26#39;t allow both)? It took us no more than three minutes to decide: the Taj is pretty, but Bundi is great! Rudyard Kipling wrote affectionately about it, and, if I recall, there is a place in town where he used to stay. If you go there, you%26#39;ll see why. And here%26#39;s a tip: there are both daily and overnight buses between Bundi and Udaipur, which may solve the problem of visiting Udaipur, which (in 2004, anyway) was not particularly well-served by trains (it was on its own narrow gauge, so the fast inter-city trains had to bypass it).

Apart from Jaipur, which was a fluke, we never stayed at a posh hotel; our choices ranged from 100 rupees a night (in Hampi) to a top of 938 rupees (in expensive Mumbai). With train travel we did overnight in 3AC sleepers whenever possible... we booked most of the tickets after we arrived, and always asked for SL and SU seats in class 3AC, as these, we found out, are almost like going up a class (to 2AC)without paying the premium. At no time did we ever have an uncomfortable night, we had no trouble with bedbugs or cockroaches, and we didn%26#39;t get sick from the food, which we bought from either roadside stalls or from restaurants where we saw a lot of locals eating. Maybe we were lucky... and I know of many people who hate India and hate Rajasthan (whose towns usually have open sewers running down the street where the footpath ought to be) most of all. I guess it depends on your attitude. You need to meet India Half-way... it%26#39;s not New York, it%26#39;s not London.... it%26#39;s not even Coolum Beach. What it is, is wonderful, and totally unlike any other place on earth.

    Have a great trip!

Hi, this is just a quick note, I shall write again and thankyou once more.

Where to eat,, Thailand was amazing

    Hi Hartlepool

We came back from Ko Samui last week and found prices in Thailand pretty similar to those in Goa. I%26#39;d say the drinks are slightly cheaper in Goa but the price of food was about the same. There are loads of great restaurants in Candolim serving excellent food.

    anniversary in goa

    Hi Phil

Have a look through some of the existing threads on this forum.

North and South Goa are quite different. The north is quite built up, busy, lively, the south is quieter and less built up. It depends entirely on what sort of holiday you want.

    anniversary in goa

hi london. we are looking for a mixture of a peaceful holiday with some entertainment also, the most important being quiet at night, is there anywhere you can suggest so i could have a look at?

    thanks

    phil

I%26#39;d suggest somewhere in the south - Haathi Mahal in Cavelossim, or the Holiday Inn for starters? Or possibly the Majorda (which apparently is due to undergo a refurb at the end of this season).

There are other posh hotels in the south like the Leela Palace (which I wouldn%26#39;t stay in on principle, but that%26#39;s another matter entirely), Park Hyatt, Kenilworth that you could look at. I%26#39;ve no idea what your budget is or what sort of hotel you prefer. Have you had a look at some of the tour operators%26#39; brochures?

Have a look at Cavelossim/Mobor, any questions on the area just ask? For some photo%26#39;s of acouple of trips based there have a look at flickr.com/photos/… and flickr.com/photos/… they will give you a bit of an idea of the area.

we went to Dona Sylvia for the first time and for our 25th....it was a great first time experience, now we have the Goabug!

Its in Cavelossim or you could try the Holiday in thats really nice and maybe spend the night in a beach hut for romance ..or a couple of nights at Cola Beach as a special treat. http://www.colabeach.com/faqs.html

hi, not seen any brochures yet im sending the missus down town to get them tomorrow, i%26#39;ll have a look through the places you have recommended.

    thanks

    phil

hi alisha, that is the first hotel i looked at on the firstchoice website and it did look rather nice, i%26#39;ll get some brochures and have a look at it

    thanks

    phil

The only thing about the D.S.is that it is All Inclusive and the food in Goa is so cheap and is fantastic with some great restaurants that unless the price is the same/similar as B%26amp;B then it is not worth it (and even then I would still be sure to eat out most of the time)

eh up jock, i have read back on this forum and a lot of people are saying the same thing as you, it depends on what deal we can get and if there is not much price difference we will go a.i but still eat out aswel

unfortunatly we have had to change hotels from the cidade de goa to the fort aguada, we have heard great things about the fort???, any information would be great...also im confused about changing money??, do we change in this country or in india???

    fort aguada beach resort

Hi the fort certainly looks the part, we have never stayed there though.

You will have to get your money over there as you are not allowed to take rupees in or out of the country.

    When are you flying out?

    fort aguada beach resort

I have stayed at the Fort Aguada, but as it was 21 years ago, things may have changed just a little. It was very nice then though!!

lucky you, never stayed at the fort but have been a guest ay the cidsde de goa. the fort is a differnet class an sin a much better setting, righ on the beach and 5mins to the centre off baga , which you must visit. you really dont no how lucky you have been in getting moved. the cidadeis miles from anywhere and out on a limb. change money when u get to indian but dont bother about money change in hotel.take a taxi into clangute should be getting about 77 to the pound.lucky to get 70 in the hotel.

i normally use the hotal wcs when i am on the beach up at that end, the beach goes for about 7miles righ along to baga, its a great walk an dget a taxi back it willcost you abouy 3 pounds, if that. when are you going, i wil be there for 2 weeks arriving the 8th april. i allways stay at the ronhill now in baga, but woulld love to stay at the fort, you lucky devil , enjoyim sure you will.

hi joylin, we are flying out on the 5th sat, arrive in goa, lunchtime sunday.thanks for the information regarding the money, are you visiting goa??.

hi silverguy, thats made feel very happy indeed!!!, we might even see each other out ther, i could even give you a tour of the fort!!!!!!.

    thanks

I looked at the Hotel and the map on trip advisor shows hotel on other side of candolim, am i looking at wrong hotel?

ues thats right all the resorts are on the main drag about 20mins from end to end, its the best hotel on the strip.

I looked at this hotel a few times the other week when we was there.

It looks lovely from outside, that was as far as we got, because of security on the gate.

come out of the hotel and down the steps (at the right hand side there is a young lad sells fresh coconuts for 20r, just cuts the top off and gives you a straw, this is a must) and your straight on the beach, althoug i didnt quite like this beach it was a bit dirty. But a 10 - 15 min walk up the beach and it was much better. The calamari beach shack is here and we rated this very highly.

Also at night i would suggest getting a taxi into candolim should you wish to go here. As the road coming out of the hotel is a bit quiet and i would imagine very dark at night.

But hubby said to me he would love to have stayed here, i%26#39;m sure keith floyd has sayted here as well.

    enjoy goa.

    here is a map

    food in the Arpora/Calangte/Baga areas

not wishing to stir a hornets nest BUT, can anyone recommend their favourite eating places to me and wifey. some basic idea of where%26#39;s best? we both like curries; her%26#39;s is about a korma, mine can be as hot as you like. we both love most types of food, and within reason don%26#39;t really care what it cost%26#39;s so long as you get what you pay for. There are so many fab restaurants in these areas, you will be spoilt for choice.

A couple of our faves are

    Kim Faa (Baga)

    All Spice (Arpora)

Fiestas (Baga) This restaurant is in my opinion the best in Goa for beautiful surroundings, ambiance etc. It is really atmospheric, lovely for a special occasion.

There are loads more. I am sure others will tell you about their faves too.

    Sikkim Vs Nepal

    Hi,

I%26#39;ve been to Nepal (EBC trek) and might think to try Sikkim (Gochala treks) for next trekking plan in end March. I%26#39;m afraid Sikkim could not provide as best scenery as I experienced in Nepal (might lead to dissapointment). Can anyone share your views on this. If Sikkim not as beautiful as Nepal - I would rather go to Annapurna. Would like to hear your opinion. Thanks.

    Sikkim Vs Nepal

tehy have their own beauty but skkim has some fantatic sceneries nature has in this world . I wold not compare nepal and sikkim as they hve both their beauty . its yo to decide . one thing for sur sikkim does not have much tourist as nepal and its still pure and raw nature .

but in the end its you to decide . one thing for sure you shall find agreat difference in sikkim something new . as you hae been in nepal already visit sikkim y shall not regret it

    Chloroquine&Proguine

    Hi everyone,

I am going to the Colonia Santa Maria (Calangute) in April! I cant wait. My doctor has advised I take Chloroquine and Proguine so I will. I have read the other posts on all the different things you can take but I will just stick to what the doctor has recommended.

I am slightly worried because when I went to Eqypt I got bitten so much on my legs that my legs all swelled up and I had to wear a long skirt for the whole holiday it was that bad.I could not stop itching my legs and had to stay in the hotel room most of teh holiday as my legs hurt so much. What do I take to stop them biting me?!! HELP! I am going to try garlic capsules which someone recommended but is there any other things I could try? Is there a tablet I can take daily before I go taht stops them?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Lianne

    Chloroquine%26amp;Proguine

If you%26#39;re attractive to mosquitos, it%26#39;s something you have to live with. No amount of garlic or Vitamin B capsules will stop them biting you. However, you can plaster yourself in a good insect repellent.

I know everyone has their favourite, but after trying Odomos in Goa and getting bitten almost everywhere, I now stick to something with a hefty dose of DEET in it that I buy in the UK - Jungle Formula or Boots own, for example.

    Chloroquine%26amp;Proguine

I am the same and i use Expedition from the camping shops comes in different strengths i use 50%,it contains deet, it works for me,buy a spray when you get there for the room, use it before you go out at night.I burn the coils and citronella candles on the balcony.Antihistamine tablets help the itching, can be bought at any chemist in Goa.

    Regards Rita

Yeah boots do a 50% deet spray which is very good and about the cheepest you can get in the UK, as mentioned before anti histamines help with the itching. Plus if you go out in the evenings light trousers stop the little blighters getting your ancles

    Hi Lianne,

I agree with the earlier reply that if mossies are attracted to you then you have to accept that, how ever there is a repellent that is supplied to the armed forces and is available to buy in your local pharmacy, called Ben%26#39;s 100 or Ben%26#39;s 30, the 100 contains the maximum Deet allowed and the 30 contains

30%. I have the same problem as you with bites but touch wood have never been bitten when using either of these.

Have a great bite free holiday.

    AWS.

    Liane

I always get bitten, even in England so my regime in Goa is always the same, I take the prescribed Chloroquine and proguanil malaria tablets. After being in the sun I always use an aftersun with insect repellent in it (Boots do a good one), spray myself with Avon Skin so soft dry oil spray (Green one) and spray myself with Insect repellent. I always take my insect repellent out with me in the evening too. I rarely get bitten.

Its so annoying though as my hubby hardley ever gets bitten he never puts insect repellent on - nothing - but he smokes cigars and I%26#39;m convinced this is the reason. If he does get bitten (as I say rarely) his bites never itch.

We%26#39;re off to Goa again Sat week for the 6th time taking my daughter and her partner for the first time, really looking forward to showing her all the things we love in Goa.

Hi, I%26#39;ve seen the Jungle formula spray in Homebargains for about £2 cheaper than elsewhere, if you want to compare that to Boots%26#39; own?

Not been before (but can%26#39;t wait 8-) ), and a workfriend whose family is from India said just nip into a chemist if you%26#39;re bitten and they%26#39;ll give you something to stop the itching. Over here M%26amp;S are selling some little clicker thing to press against the bite to stop it itching.

    HJ

(2 weeks, 2 days, not that I%26#39;m counting)

Those little clicker things actually work quite well, and tiger balms quite effective for cooling the itching too. Bites generally swell up quite a bit on me, so I take anti-histamine cream AND tablets.

And Jenny - my husband doesn%26#39;t get bitten either. He reckons I%26#39;m the best insect repellent he%26#39;s ever come across. If he%26#39;s out with me, there%26#39;s no chance of him getting bitten because they%26#39;ll always make a beeline straight for me.

    Lianne,

The best thing that you can do is as others have suggested, wear Tropical Strength Jungle Formula, don%26#39;t wear anything scented, so no perfume but also get a fragrance free deodrant and steer clear of body moisturisers / aftersun. Have a lovely time.

I had a nasty bite once in Greece and the chemist there gave me florestil gel and its really good for the swelling and itch. but I have no idea where to get it apart from Greece???

I got some sound sleep? repellant spray and its good handbag size seemed to work ok.

I%26#39;m exactly the same as LondonGoa–girl, get bitten loads and the little buggers never touch my husband. Odomos didn%26#39;t work for me at all but 50% deet jungle formula was better, still not completely effective but alot better. Regarding the malaria tablets, I%26#39;ve taken these twice with food both times and had no side effects at all.
