Leftover Rupees

What is on the %26#39;other side%26#39; in departures at Mumbai airport by way of eating places and duty free shopping?

Don%26#39;t want to bring rupees out of India so plan to spend them, but assume if I wanted to do that in the duty free shop/s with the last bits I%26#39;d still got I%26#39;d have to smuggle them through customs?

Is it expected in the shop/s that everyone would be paying in sterling/dollars etc given that you aren%26#39;t really allowed to %26#39;export%26#39; rupees. Would they ask questions if I paid for a bottle of gin with rupees?

Leftover Rupees

They might accept your Rupees, but I wouldn%26#39;t be surprised if they discreetly tip off Customs that you are carrying Rupees abroad. I%26#39;ve known it to happen.

Better to change the bulk of it back to Pounds, the last odd ten or hundred is no reason to give you a penalty. Upto Five hundred is even allowed legally I think.

Leftover Rupees

Duty free was not open in December as it was under construction. Best to find out if they have completed their work as I was really disappointed exepecting to purchase goods and it wasn%26#39;t even open.

Duty free shops - after you checkin and go through immigration, there is zilch. There is a sad shop with overpriced carvings and Kashmiri shawls, and there%26#39;s a couple of cafes/stands where you can buy tea and chocolates.

Before you check in, there are two tiny shops, each of which sells souvernirs and assorted nonsense.

Spend in the city. Keep a final 1000/- for cab ride and emergencies, but don%26#39;t wait to spend money at the airport.

Better to get rid of most of it beforehand from the sounds of things. Thank you all very much.

Spend them before you get to the airport. Send any unused IR100 notes to me!

Pete

In 15 years we have never been stopped for taking rupees out of india and often use them for buying duty free.
