To visit Ross Island, Coral island etc, is it advisable to book a tour or can you just get a taxi to the boat and jump on?

No need to book in advance, The Tourism Department has arranged Tours and you can book one day in advance to be on the safe side.
For Coral Island if you are referring to the Havelock Island then you can walk in directly an hour before the schedule.
