My undertanding of the Indian rules is that you can not own property in India if you are not an Indian

I am looking into buying a property in Goa, I have spoken to some people that sell in India and it can be done, and not too difficult either.

I agree with Rob, you need to be careful. People who have property to sell are going to say it can be done, aren%26#39;t they? There are loopholes at the moment but that%26#39;s not to say that they won%26#39;t be closed.

I think you should check out the IndiaMike website and there%26#39;s also a tale of someone who came unstuck on the britishexpats.co.uk website. The thread is called ';Help - nearly buying in Goa'; and the posts from Douglas M are a bit of an eye-opener.

Thanks very much for letting us know about this thread, it was indeed very interesting reading! There%26#39;s no way I will be buying a property in Goa now.... better to rent and not take any chances.

Things may settle down after the elections in May but it%26#39;s certainly a minefield at the moment.

If you look at the Indian Govt web site they say you can not buy if you are not indian

My father in law bought a property in Goa three years ago (he is English - not Indian) in Betalbatim (southern Goa) - the process was relatively easy - however he did have to set up a company and he has to provide accounts for the company each year to his indian accountant - that as far as i am aware is the way to get through the loophole

Has he got the deeds to the property? If not then really isn%26#39;t this just rentt in advance?Spoke to people this year and they have not got the deeds so how can they say they%26#39;own%26#39;it?Also check who is looking after property while he is not there - during monsoon it will need to be aired about 3 times a week otherwise eveything gets ruined with the humidity/damp etc plus we know a couple whose property was occupied by non authorised family when they turned up for their holiday - as on previous emails beware!
