Scooter hire Calangute

Visiting Goa for first time in April.

Anyone got any advice on wisdom or not of hiring scooter?

Yes,

Don%26#39;t do it!

They are mad behind the wheel in Goa,

suggest you have a look at the traffic conditions and make your own mind up. you can hire a taxi for a whole day for about 拢10, so this is the preferred form of transport for me.

I always hire a scooter and look forward to it. But I am used to the traffic there and I never use it after dark.

Scooters are great fun. They drive like mad, but thats half the fun. Just stay local and don%26#39;t drive to big places. I often fill the tank up and explore the true Goa by driving through the tiny villages. Last year they had a monopoly going on bike hire, everyone was charging the same. I simply ask the hotel staff, they will lend you theres for a fraction of the cost.

Hi

DO NOT hire unless the vehicle has Black/Yellow number plates.These are the only vehicles that are liscenced and legally can be hired.If you want to risk the normal Black/White plates on your head be it as the colour of the plates will make you a target for sharp eyed police and ';FINES';

Also obtain an International Liscence before leaving the UK,that also is a legal requirement over here.I believe that it is the 1949 version as there are two.No internation Liscence another';FINE';

Check that you have copy of bike papers/imission certificate and insurance before taking the bike AND a crash helmet is required for the DRIVER if going onto a highway eg: The NH17 to Panji.which continues right down South Goa as the main Highway and up to and into Maharastra

Road rules are basically the same as UK but no one follows them so the safe approach is always if in doubt GIVE WAY.Watch out for stray Pigs,dogs.cows and Indians.All will walk run or appear right in front of you from no where.

The problem is now a little worse with more of the eastern Block tourists here hiring m/cycles as they appear to have their own set of undifined rules that even the Goans cant figure out.Must be that most of them were tank drivers or dispatch riders in Afghanistan

Thank you everyone.

Reconsidering!
