Where to go in India with 3-4 weeks?

Hi

I%26#39;m currently thinking about going to India for 3-4 weeks but as the country is so large I would like some advice on what places would be worth visiting.

When are planning to visit? The weather will determine what part of the country you can go to.

Since you have many beaches in Australia (better ones too) I would recommend skipping that in India.

A good plan is Rajasthan (very picturesque) with parts of Gujarat if you have time. Agra and Taj Mahal are hard to avoid. For a change of pace, it is good to head for the mountains via Amristar and Sikh country: Dharamsala, Shimla, Manali and Mc Loed Ganj is very interesting with Tibetans in exile and Dalai Lama in residence.

The state of Kerala is the best according to me. keralatourism.org

Its divided into 3 vertical strips, the West coastal backwaters region, the central plantation region and the eastern high altitude region. As another member said, you have better beaches in Australia so skip the beaches but do not miss the backwaters - Allepey / Kumarakom, you can stay on a houseboat if you prefer. Visit tea estates at Munnar highlands and see Anaimudi at approx. 2650m the highest peak in peninsular India. Visit wildlife sanctuaries - Periyar Tiger sanctuary at Thekkady - periyartigerreserve.org is one of the best. You can also visit spice plantations, temples and world famous Ayurvedic spas. Cochin is a good starting point. You could also combine a trip to Kerala with a visit to neighbouring Tamil Nadu with its ancient architecturally splendid temples and culture. April and May are very hot, June to Aug/Sept. is the monsoons, after that is pleasant.

Thanks for the advice.

I will be most likely traveling in Feb-Mar
