Just returned home from five weeks in India and must say we had a wonderful trip. We did the golden triangle but the high light of the trip was to Assam. The National Parks were great and the accommodations and guides/drivers were great. Learned when we were visitng with an Indian couple living in Liverpool that the Foreign Secretary%26#39;s office had isssued a travel warning for Assam. We had ho trouble whatsoever. Had a great time visiting with the locals and gained even a greater appreciation of the Indian people. Those that are headed to India--enjoy.
Trip Results
There is political unrest in Darjeeling area. A General strike started 20th Feb 08 and I think is still ongoing now. We arrived there on 18th and had to leave on 19th along with all other tourists. Even before the general strike all government run things were closed - toy train, zoo etc.
Given that the local peoples demand have not been met - my guess is the unrest will continue.
