We returned from chennai last month and are planning to visit south India again at the end of this year. We%26#39;ll still be spending significant time in chennai and southern Tamil Nadu. But, we want to visit Kerala in the middle as well.
It looks like we%26#39;ll have 3-4 days to spend in Kerala (more like 4). We%26#39;ll be visiting Rameswaram in TN and then plan to take a train trip through Kerala and arrive back in chennai.
We are interested in nature and the scenery. We will be there in Oct-Nov-Dec/2008. Backwaters and house boats are a must do, it looks like...one nature reserve if it has animals.
So, what is the best way to take a train trip from south TN through Kerala and land back in chennai. Can you suggest a 4 day itinerary of stations/places to stop and things to do.

For a 3 nights/ 4 days travel in kerala it would be ideal to spend 2 nights in Periyar( Thekkady ) . a nature reserve , and then drive down to the backwaters which is 15o kms west to periyar for a house boat trip with overnigth stay ...
Periyar can be reached from Rameshwaram via madurai ( temple town in taminadu )
and if you have a day more to spend , may be you can spend a night at Fortcochin ( a world heritage site) or Cherai beach or Thattekkad (bird sanctuary) all thse place in Ernakulam district and proceed to Chennai from ernakulam
