How much can a TA save us on Oberoi and Taj Hotels?

Been considering India for a trip over Christmas 2008? We went to Thailand in 2005 and from the forums I have read, etc. and the research the luxury hotels in India are much more expensive. We stayed at Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental in Thailand (Chiang Mai) for around $400 US. India properties seems to be around $700-900 for a basic room. So my question is how much can a good TA save us at this high end resorts?

Christmas 2008? Youd be lucky to get rooms with Oberoi and Taj, specially if youre looking at Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Agra. Ive been going crazy trying to work out an itinerary in the same period and having tough time getting rooms at the Vilas and Taj properties at these places. Also theyre only willing to confirm at full rack rates. I dont see rates dropping later at least for the Xmas period. Or avoid India and come back when the rates are saner.

Thank you very much, this is a bummer b/c the Christmas vacation time is the only time when husband and I can get two or more weeks off work.

India has a host of stand-alone Botique properties which cater to the discerning traveller. They may not be as well advertised as the Oberoi etc, but hold their own in comparison.

Devi Garh outside Udaipur, Rohet outside Jodhpur (Madonna just spent time there), Raj Palace in Jaipur, The Aman properties in Rajasthan and the CGH Group in Kerala just to name a few.
