good restaurants Calcutta

Does anyone have any good suggestions for ';relatively'; inexpensive restaurants in CCU? We are staying at the Oberoi - are there any good, inexpensive restaurants near there?

As always, thanks for your help

good restaurants Calcutta

There are many good and inexpensive restaurants near the Oberoi as it is in the center of the city. I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by ';relatively'; inexpensive though. Hotels and restaurants in India are usually much cheaper for the same level of quality and service than they would be in North America or Europe.

Thanks for responding - I meant something under 15 US PP - I was just trying to clarify :)

Any specific names of restaurants ( Indian style) that I could try?

Thanks again.

You didn%26#39;t go through the older posts, did you ?

Walk down or take the Metro to Park Street.

Stroll along, take your pick.

If you%26#39;re feeling adventurous, try Bengali food, which is really worth sampling. brave2 will no doubt recommend places, my personal favourite is Bhojohari Manna in Ballygunge. Needless to add, a visit to Calcutta without sampling their local Bengali sweets, easily the best in India, is a wasted opportunity!

Restaurants near Oberoi

Aaheli inside the Peerless Inn Hotel ( Oberoi%26#39;s neighbour - take a right after u come out of the hotel) for Bengali Food - cheaper than Oberoi ; but may cross the USD 15 pp.

Zaranj - near the Museum - take a left after u come out of the hotel - Kababs are ok - again the bill may cross $15pp

Kasturi off Free School Street ( this is a bit difficult to find - its near the Sudder Street / Free School Street crossing) - cheap and good Bengali food.

Restaurants on Park Street

Peter Cat - for Chello Kabab ( an Iranian dish and a favourite of Kolkata ) - cheap and fast service.

Ivory ( the new name for Grain of Salt) on Camac Street - inside the shopping mall that houses Westside and Pantaloons

Marco Polo in China on Park Street for Chinese Food.

Astor on Shakespeare Sarani ( Theatre Road) for Kababs.

Out of these - if u were to go to one place - I would go to Peter Cat for a plate of Chello Kabab.

Thanks everyone-

Brave 1 I didn%26#39;t go through the older posts - sorry, major construction going on in my house and was lazy and relying on my fellow trip advisors to help me out. You guys came through! thanks again so much

Thank you Snandi and Gio1314 - will definitely try the food

When I was studying in Calcutta, Peter Cat was our favourite restaurant for a date. I%26#39;m going to go look it up again when I am there next.

Deepa,

I had a meal in Peter Cat a few months back. The Chelo Kabab is still good, but the resturant overall is not what it used to be.

If you%26#39;re nostalgic, ok. If you are looking for good quality food, move to Sourav%26#39;s, across the street.

For Indian food...try Amber which is not very far from the Oberoi Grand..within your budget....recommendation: kebabs

For continental food - Mocambo - Park Street/Free School Street crossing - again within your budget

Make sure you visit Flury%26#39;s on Park Street - that%26#39;s a %26#39;tea room%26#39; though you get more than just tea there:) - within your budget

Brave 1, I agree with you on the fact that Peter Cat is not what it used to be....although there is a wait time of almost 45 minutes for dinner even on a week day. However, there is a huge price differential between Peter Cat and Sourav%26#39;s....so for the price I think Peter Cat is better value for money.
